What’s in Your Fertiliser? It Might Be the Key to Cutting Emissions

Once you know your emissions profile, the next big question is: “What can I actually change to reduce them?”

Fertilisers are one of the biggest contributors to on-farm emissions — but also one of the biggest levers for change. And luckily, some smart people are working on ways to reduce emissions without compromising productivity.

That’s why we’re dedicating a whole session to low-emission fertilisers at the 2025 National Carbon Farming Conference. These aren’t pie-in-the-sky ideas — they’re emerging solutions, trialled by farmers, that could change the way we fertilise in a low-carbon future.

Here’s a taste of what you’ll hear:

🌱 On-Farm Ammonia Production — It’s Happening

Greg Butler (ex-SA No-Till Farmers Association) will share progress on a low-emissions ammonia fertiliser production plant in NSW. The goal? Give farmers direct access to nitrogen fertiliser made on-farm — lowering transport costs and emissions. This project may be breaking ground by the time the conference rolls around!

🌱 Hydgene Tech and Plasma Systems

We’ll hear about two fascinating innovations:

  • Hydgene’s microbial solution, which uses bacteria to generate hydrogen and fertiliser inputs

  • Green Lightning, a plasma-based approach to producing nitrogen fertiliser on-farm with renewable electricity

Both are designed to cut the emissions intensity of fertiliser production — and both are Aussie innovations worth watching.

🌱 Cleaner Phosphates: Recovered, Recycled, Smarter

Did you know that phosphorus fertiliser can be made from recovered wastewater? We’ll explore Crystal Green from Ostara — a slow-release fertiliser that’s kinder to waterways and delivers nutrients when crops actually need them.

🌱 Farmer Experience: What’s Working in the Paddock

It’s one thing to hear about the science. It’s another to hear from the farmers using it. We’ll include on-the-ground perspectives from producers trialling these fertilisers — what’s promising, what’s practical, and what still needs work.

We know the future of agriculture involves change. And as supply chains, governments, and consumers start demanding lower emissions, these kinds of options will matter more and more.

This session will help you answer:

  • What are my options?

  • Who's already using these?

  • What will this look like in 2–5 years?

And most importantly — how can I get ahead of the curve?
